Heavy fighting is now being reported in several suburbs of the Syrian capital Damascus. It’s said to be the worst violence to hit the Syrian capital since the start of the 16 month rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the violence has been concentrated near the Republican Guard headquarters in the Qudsiya suburb, just 9 kilometers from central Damascus. Fighting is also taking place around other parts of the capital.

Tanks and armoured vehicles have been seen on the streets and some activists say one tank has been blown up. Residents say they’ve heard ambulance sirens around military hospitals all night. Some analysts say the government is stepping up its campaign against rebel groups, who’ve taken up positions in the Damascus suburbs during the conflict.
