Dogs in Taipei are being captured on camera minutes before they’re put down. The resulting photographs are now being put on display in a disturbing exhibition.

This two-month old puppy is having to sit still while a photographer takes his portrait. But this is not a normal picture. This puppy has no owner and will not get one. Once the photo shoot is over, the puppy will be taken away and put down. The portraits are part of an attempt to highlight the problem of stray dogs in China’s Taiwan.

Everyday, around 200 dogs are killed at government-run shelters, the majority of them household pets abandoned by owners. This year alone an estimated 80,000 strays will be put down. Activists say 70 percent of dogs in shelters are killed after a 12-day waiting period, despite government efforts to find them homes.
