Australia truffle harvest begins

This time of year marks the start of the truffle season in Australia. In Tasmania it’s set to be one of the best seasons on record. That’s good news for diners around the world as Tasmania’s truffles are exported abroad.

The truffle sniffer dogs are out and the dollars are beginning to role in as truffle farmers execute their search and find’ mission.

This year’s Tasmania truffle harvest is promising to be the most lucrative for producers, and growers are starting to reap the rewards as higher quality truffles are resulting in more exports within Australia and around the globe.

Truffles may look dull but they’re start in life is far from dull.

Premium truffles can sell for up to two thousand five hundred Australian dollars a kilogram.

Truffle grower John Baily believes Tasmania’s truffles are becoming a worldwide phenomena.

Johon Baily, truffle grower, said, "It’s wonderful, we’re really pleased this year, the way its looking, we’ve been harvesting now for two weeks and we’ve had the best truffles we’ve had to date."

The first truffles were discovered in Tasmania in the late 1990s, when there were only a handful of growers.

Now there are more than thirty, producing hundreds of kilos a year.

So what do the connoisseurs think? Well Tasmanian based chef Daniel Alps believes they’re getting tastier.

Daniel Alps, a chef, said, "The quality of Tasmanian truffles has improved dramatically even in the last year, the size is getting better, the firmness is better, their condition is tremendous."

The harvest is due to end in September with shipments already sent to Asia and samples to Europe and the United States.
