UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus. The two-hour meeting on Monday aimed to salvage a peace effort proposed by Annan.

The former UN secretary-general acknowledged that the international community’s efforts to find a political solution to the escalating violence in Syria have failed. Annan says he has agreed with President Bashar Assad on an approach to end the violence in Syria.

Bashar al-Assad said US political support for "terrorists" was hindering the peace envoy’s plan to end 16 months of bloodshed. He also accused Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of supplying the rebels trying to overthrow him with arms and other logistical support.

Meanwhile, anti-Assad activists in Syria reported army shelling and clashes with rebels on Monday in Deir Ezzor, Deraa, Homs, Aleppo and a neighbourhood of Damascus. Residents also reported the sound of gunfire in the capital. An activist website said over 100 Syrians had been killed on Sunday, most of them civilians.
