China has called on all parties to continue to support Kofi Annan’s mediation efforts in Syria. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Liu Weimin says resolving the conflict through political means is still the current consensus of everyone involved. It was also agreed during the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Syria Action Group held last month in Geneva.

Liu Weimin, Spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry, said, "China believes the pressing task now is to continue to support and coordinate Annan’s mediation efforts, urge the Syrian government and opposition forces to implement Annan’s six-point plan and UN Security Council resolutions, and implement the spirit of the communique and relevant proposals of the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Action Group on Syria."

Kofi Annan was appointed as the UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy in February. He proposed in March a six-point peace plan that was backed by the UN Security Council and accepted by the Syrian government.

Under his proposal, a UN monitor mission was sent to Syria to observe the implementation of a ceasefire that was agreed in April. However, the United Nations reportedly considered reducing the number of its monitors without changing its mandate, after the observer mission had to suspend operations because of safety concerns.
