Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has met in Moscow with a delegation from Syian opposition group "The National Committee For Democratic Change" headed by Michel Kilo. They discussed ways to end the bloodshed in Syria. Both sides expressed their willingness to bring about a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, said, "We are interested exactly in what was written in the Geneva communique: the immediate end of violence and in the organisation of the political process in which Syrians themselves, with the participation of both the government and all the opposition groups, determine their future."

Michel Kilo, Syrian Opposition Leader, said, "I believe it was a very effective and productive dialogue. As you know, Russia is a very important country for us, for finding a peaceful solution to our crisis and I hope it will play a positive role in the future. "

Kilo’s visit to Moscow comes ahead of a similar trip later this week by the head of the opposition Syrian National Council. The Syrian opposition and the West want Russia to use its influence on Assad to help bring about an end to the escalating violence. Moscow has consistently refused to call for Assad to quit power. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also told Kilo that Russia was the only state talking to both the regime and the opposition about implementing the stalled peace plan put forward by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
