Clashes in and around Syria's capital Damascus have intensified, one day after a bomb killed three members of President Bashar Assad's inner circle.

Activists say government forces shelled a number of neighbourhoods in and around the city overnight and through Thursday. Fighting has been focused in the southern and north-eastern suburbs, as well as the central areas of Mezze and Kafar Souseh where several security sites are located.

Opposition groups say so far, Thursday's violence has caused more than 13 deaths. Hundreds of families were reported fleeing from violence stricken areas.

Since Sunday, the capital has been witnessing a surge in clashes between government troops and armed rebels. The intensity of clashes ramped up Wednesday after a blast tore through a security compound hosting a high-level security meeting.

The bombing killed the country's defence minister, his deputy, and a former defence minister.
