New Indian President sworn in

India’s former Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, has been sworn in as India’s 13th president. The ceremony was held in the central hall of parliament in the Indian capital.

It was attended by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi and Singh’s Cabinet colleagues. The 76-year-old Mukherjee is a top leader of the Congress Party.

At different times he has served as foreign minister, defense minister and finance minister. Mukherjeereplaces India’s first woman president Pratibha Patil and will serve a five year term.
