Eight players charged with throwing matches at the Olympic badminton tournament have been disqualified from the women's doubles.

The players are from China, South Korea and Indonesia. Top seeds and world champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang from China were among the four pairs being punished by the Badminton World Federation. The Chinese pair and their South Korean rivals were booed by the crowd after hitting serves into the net and striking easy shots, trying to lose on purpose.

The farce was repeated in the next women's doubles between South Korea and Indonesia. A Chinese delegation spokesman said the delegation was taking the incident seriously and had ordered its own probe.
