Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang is receiving treatment at London’s Wellington Hospital, two days after undergoing surgery on a torn Achilles tendon in his right foot. Doctors say Liu is recovering well and can now walk slowly using a crutch.

Liu originally planned to leave hospital and return to the Athletes’ Village on Saturday. But doctors advised him to stay in hospital until he leaves London on August 13th. A recovery plan has been drawn up for him, which he’ll follow after his return to Shanghai.

A Chinese doctor, who has also examined Liu, says he needs at least four weeks to recover from his injury. The Chinese sports hero stumbled at the first hurdle in the men’s 110m hurdle race on Tuesday.
