The annual joint drills between South Korea and the US are scheduled to take place amid cross-border tensions.
The exercises will take place from the 20th to the 31st of August. They are due to involve some 56,000 South Korean and 30,000 US soldiers. The DPRK was informed of the dates of the exercises by the UN armistice commission.
The neutral commission, which includes representatives from Switzerland, China and other nations selected by the United Nations will supervise the exercise. But despite such assurances, the DPRK has condemned the joint exercises for pushing the Korean Peninsula into a "touch-and-go" situation.
