India has test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni 3 ballistic missile from a base in the eastern state of Odisha.

The surface-to-air missile, with a range of more than 3 thousand kilometres, was successfully fired. The latest test comes two days after India test fired its second 4 thousand kilometre range Agni 4 missile from the same base. Agni 3 is capable of carrying warheads weighing up to 1.5 tons.

It is 17 metres long, weighs around 50 tons and is equipped with hybrid navigation, guidance and control systems along with advanced on-board computers.

The first development trial of Agni 3 was carried out in July 2006. But it failed to achieve the desired result. The three subsequent tests conducted were all successful.
