Lebanon’s army says the nation faces a critical phase after the assassination of a senior intelligence officer prompted violent protests across the country.

The army called on political leaders to be cautious when expressing stances and opinions. It said it would take "decisive measures" to prevent chaos in areas of high tension. A convoy of armoured personnel carriers entered the tense neighbourhood of Kaskas where Sunni demonstrators have been clashing with soldiers.

Kaskas is close to the Shiite area of southern Beirut. At least five people are reported wounded after Lebanese troops and gunmen exchanged fire. Meanwhile, four people were killed in the northern city of Tripoli, including a 9-year-old girl, after Sunni gunmen attacked Shia communities, sparking violent clashes.

The violence has heightened fears that conflict in neighbouring Syria could be spreading into Lebanon.
