Israeli army tank units engaged armed Palestinian militants along the border of the central Gaza Strip on Monday morning. The exchange of fire erupted after an Israeli airstrike killed two Palestinians in northern Gaza.

Militants fired mortar bombs at Israeli troops spotted inside Gaza’s boundary fence, drawing air strikes against a Hamas training camp and other targets. Hamas claimed one of the dead gunmen as its own, and the other was not immediately identified. Cross-border hostilities flared-up two weeks ago, following an Israeli airstrike that killed a militant in southern Gaza.

Since then, militants have fired dozens of rockets and mortar shells into Israel. Meanwhile numerous Israeli reprisal strikes against rocket-launching crews have killed five militants and wounded others. At a meeting in Jerusalem with Middle East quartet envoy Tony Blair, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to stop the rocket attacks.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, said, "We have rockets. We’ve got Hamas, supported by Iran, firing rockets at us, they’ve fired again. We’re not going to let anyone arm themselves and fire rockets on us and think that they can do this with impunity. They’re not going to get away with it. We attack them before, we attack them after and we’re going to prevent them from arming themselves. This is our policy. This is a very different policy that I put in. You don’t let them get away with it. And they know it. That’s what we’re doing."
