10-24-2012 09:17 BJT Special Report:Libya in Post-Gaddafi Era |

Thousands of Libyans have gathered in Tripoli’s Martyr Square to celebrate the anniversary of the country’s declaration of liberation. Citizens are expressing hope the new authorities will extend freedom and stability across all regions.

Mabrook Issa, Libyan citizen, said, "I feel like many Libyan citizens and feel our country is free and stable. I hope that the officials who are elected observe all parts of Libya, big and small, not just Tripoli and Benghazi. For there is no difference between one region and another, all should enjoy freedom and security."

Cars lined the streets and drivers beeped their horns around the square, known as Green Square during Muammar Gaddafi’s rule. In a scene of jubilant celebrations men, women and children chanted and waved flags. A fireworks display saw the celebrations go on into the night.

Rebel forces with support from the United Nations Security Council, ousted long-time dictator Gaddafi, after an eight month civil war last year. But a year later, Libya is still fractured by rival militias and the government is struggling to impose its authority. New fighting has flared in the hilltop town of Bani Walid, south of Tripoli. The clashes are between rebels defending the former stronghold of slain dictator Muammar Gaddafi and pro-government militias.
