S. Korea, US stage joint drill

11-01-2012 08:37 BJT

South Korea and the United States have staged a joint aerial drill to practice search and rescue missions.

The joint aerial exercise, code named Max Thunder, involved about 62 aircraft, including F-15, F-16 and South Korea’s E-737 aircrafts. South Korea’s E-737, also known as the "Peace Eye" participated for the first time.

The military drill comes at a time of heightened tensions between South Korea and the DPRK.

Last week the DPRK threatened to carry out a military strike against South Korean activists, planning to send anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.

The lieutenant general for the United States Air Force says this latest drill merely aims to help South Korea defend itself against any potential threat.

Lieutenant general for the United States Air Force Jan-Marc Jouas said, "Well, in 2015 there will be a transition of operational control from US forces to the Republic of Korea, but our objectives remains the same. That is to deter, defend, and if necessary, defeat any aggression against South Korea."
