Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei says China’s new four-point plan for Syria is an important continuation of China’s consistent efforts to push for a political solution to the issue. The plan was made when Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi met visiting UN-Arab Special Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi Wednesday.

Hong says, "The specific constructive suggestions in the proposal such as a phase-by-phase and region-by-region ceasefire and the establishment of a transitional governing body, are made by China based on the latest situation, Kofi Annan’s six-point plan, relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and the communique of the Geneva foreign ministers’ meeting of the Action Group for Syria."

Hong Lei also said the situation in Syria remains critical. Challenges still lie ahead for making a political resolution. Hong Lei urges the international community to fully cooperate with and support envoy Brahimi’s mediation efforts with a more intense sense of urgency and responsibility, and make real progress in implementing the communique.
