Hundreds of women have participated in rallies and awareness campaigns in northern India on World AIDS Day. Activists say making women aware will help to combat the disease. December 1st marks a day for remembrance as well as hope for a cure.

Bollywood actress and former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan carried the message to HIV affected people at a hospital in Mumbai. She urged the people to fight back the stigma by undergoing tests. India’s fight against HIV over the past decade has seen great success. UNAIDS statistics show its rate of new HIV infections fell by more than 50 percent between 2001 to 2009, surpassing the global rate of 25 percent. But UNAIDS warns that India should not stop investment in AIDS awareness.
