China has rejected accusations from Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, that China is using its territorial disputes with other nations to maintain domestic support.
Abe made the comments in an interview with the Washington Post. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei expressed shock, saying it was rare for a state leader to make such irresponsible remarks attacking a neighboring country.
Hong Lei stressed that China has been consistent in developing mutually beneficial relations with Japan, but that it would not stand such accusations. China has solemnly demanded an explanation from Japan.
