China urges political solution to Syria crisis

09-12-2013 22:34 BJT Special Report: Crisis in Syria |

China has called for all sides to reach a consensus through negotiations on Russia’s proposal on Syria chemical weapons.

Hong Lei, Spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry, said, "On the Syria issue, we should uphold the international ban on the use of chemical weapons. We must also remain committed to a political solution."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Syria has taken a "major step" in easing tensions in the country by showing support for Russia’s proposal to place its chemical weapons stockpiles under international control.

China welcomes the Syrian government’s latest statement, and hopes all parties will seize the opportunity, respond positively to the statement and push for a proper solution to the issue of chemical weapons in Syria through political and diplomatic means.

The spokesman’s statement came after French President Francois Hollande said on Wednesday that a forceful response through military means was still open, if all diplomatic options failed.
