US drones cause severe civilian casualties

10-25-2013 23:22 BJT

Intensive research and development on drones or unmanned aerial vehicles has been conducted by the United States since the 1990s. Prior to that, during World War I and World War II, pilotless flying bombs had shown some promise.

Since the first decade of the 21st century, the U.S. extensively used drones in its combat operations. The Middle East suffered the most from drone attacks after the U.S. deployed all its drones in the region in March 2008.

The indiscriminate attacks caused several civilian casualties in Yemen, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, triggering strong protests and criticism.

Yemeni media reported that in 2012, 347 people in Yemen died due to drone attacks. 40 percent of them were reportedly civilians.
