10-28-2013 22:39 BJT

Life has come to a standstill for villagers in eastern India where flash floods have inundated bridges, homes and farmland, forcing many to flee to safer areas.

Heavy rainfall after cyclone Phailin triggered flash flooding in the Bankura district of West Bengal state. Flooded villages in the region were inaccessible on Sunday after a lone bridge was submerged. The floodwaters have also covered large areas of farmland.

Meanwhile torrential rains in southern Andhra Pradesh state, has also led to flash floods in several districts. India’s disaster preparedness has improved dramatically in recent years, and aid workers praised precautions taken by authorities for cyclone Phailin such as early warnings, pre-positioning of rations in shelters and orderly evacuations.
