The dialogue between China and the US has evolved over time, from the original "China-US Strategic Dialogue," to the current "China-US Strategic AND Economic Dialogue."

The two sides started the "China-US Strategic Dialogue" in 2005, as an effort aimed at stabilizing bilateral relations. One year later, the "China-US Strategic Economic Dialogue" was launched as the top level consultation mechanism between the two nations.

After the outbreak of the global financial crisis, US President Barack Obama wanted to upgrade the "Strategic Economic Dialogue" into an all-around exchange, which led to the establishment of the current "China-US Strategic AND Economic Dialogue."

Professor Zhang Hanling from University of International Business & Economics said, "The current dialogue is not simply aimed at the economy or politics. It may be significant to the global economy, politics, and international safety as well."

The two-track dialogue is considered highly efficient, as it involves topics touching upon both security and economics. The first round was held in Washington last July. Meanwhile, the level of importance was also upgraded.

Professor Zhang also said, "I think future China-US economic and political relations will give priority to cooperation, while competition still co-exists. The economy will be the key to China-US trade and political relations."

The second round of the dialogue taking place in Beijing welcomes the largest US delegation in history. More than 200 American officials, led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, are attending.
