Many ASEAN members have well-established capital markets. Some have successfully attracted a number of quality Chinese firms to list on their stock exchanges.

Founded in 1999, the Singapore Exchange is the result of the merger of two well-established financial institutions, the Stock Exchange of Singapore and the Singapore International Monetary Exchange. The exchange is also the first exchange in Asia-Pacific to be listed via a public offering and private placement. It has over 770 listed companies. Nearly 310 firms come from overseas, and around 160 of that are Chinese enterprises.

Compared with the Singapore Exchange, the Indonesia Stock Exchange has a much longer history. It originally opened in 1912. In 2009, its index surged by nearly 80 percent. The market is considered one the most promising capital markets worldwide. Although no Chinese firms have yet entered the market, nearly all the heavyweight Indonesian entities on the exchange have business operations in China.

The Indonesia Stock Exchange will send a delegation to China next month to attract quality Chinese firms to list on the market. The Indonesian government has recently approved a plan to open up its capital market to foreign enterprises. A Malaysian firm has already submitted an application for a stock market listing. Some Chinese companies have also shown interest in entering the Indonesian market.
