Mainland firms to spend billions in Taiwan

07-15-2010 09:11 BJT

A large purchasing team from the Chinese mainland has arrived in Taiwan, to buy an estimated 5.3 billion U.S. dollars worth of LCD panels. Companies from across the Strait are working together in LCD research and development.

The purchasing delegation is made up of managers from eight major mainland TV manufacturers, including Haier, Hisense and TCL. The buying trip was initiated by China Video Industry Association. Back in 2009, the association led a team that ordered 3.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of LCD panels in Taiwan.

Bai Weimin, Secretary General of China Video Industry Association said "So far this year, mainland TV manufacturers and three major Taiwan LCD panel producers have signed letters of intention worth around 5.3 billion U.S. dollars. We're now working together to carry out those deals. "

Bai Weimin also says the Chinese mainland produced nearly 100 million color TV sets last year, accounting for almost half of the world's total. It's now the world's largest TV maker and consumer. This time, the delegation wants to purchase more in LED backlight panels.

Bai Weimin said "LED TV production will be one of the fast growing areas of the future. Industry experts forecast the trend of using power-saving LED chips to replace traditional ones as the backlight source for LCD panels. And Taiwan firms have technological advantages in this field. "

The association expects LED TVs to comprise more than 30 percent of the total LCD TVs sold on the mainland this year, rather than the 20 percent previously estimated. Last year, the portion was only 15 percent.
