China's passenger car sales rose 15.4 percent in July from a year earlier, slowing sharply from the beginning of the year as the slow auto sales season settles in.

The China Automotive Technology and Research Center says retail sales of sedans, sport utility vehicles and multipurpose vehicles came to more than 820-thousand units last month. That represents a 3.4 percent decline from June.

Experts say sales might slow further in August as auto manufactures cut their output during the summer recess. Overall vehicle sales, including trucks and buses, came to 1.06 million units in July, up 17.2 percent from a year ago, but down 6.7 percent from June.
