Thai PM: ASEAN FTA a great opportunity

08-05-2010 08:53 BJT

Thailand's Prime Minister says the ASEAN Free Trade Area will continue to serve the country, as a crucial platform in its economic relations with ASEAN counterparts.

In a ceremony to mark the 68th anniversary of the Department of Foreign Trade on Wednesday, Abhisit Vejjajiva said trade liberalization under the ASEAN FTA, which has been effective since the beginning of the year, has so far resulted in continuous growth in trade between Thailand and other member countries.

Covering 600 million people, the FTA has created a great opportunity for Thailand to expand its exports in the regional market, which accounted for 23 percent of Thailand's export volume in the first half of the year. Major Thai exports to ASEAN are cars, computers and parts, machinery and farm produce.
