The Japanese government will consider fresh stimulus steps, ahead of an expected meeting between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa.
Economics minister Satoshi Arai says the government will begin debating stimulus measures to shore up the economy on Friday. One of the options is extending the year-end deadline on subsidies for household purchases of energy-efficient consumer electronics.
The meeting is expected to be held later this week, or early next week. The agenda is likely to cover the yen's strength and possible responses, although likely options are seen as limited.
