The first of many Chinese tour groups bound for Canada departed on Wednesday. It's expected the country will become a top international travel destination for Chinese holidaymakers.

Almost 400 tourists, making up 20 tour groups, departed from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, bound for Vancouver on Wednesday. To mark the occasion, a farewell ceremony was held, where travellers were given special Canadian gifts.

After the introduction of tourist visas for Chinese tour groups, many are expected to take advantage of the new holiday destination.

Tourists say they are very much looking forward to their Canadian adventures.

One Chinese tourist said "I want to see Canada's protected environment, their lifestyle and the natural scenery of the Rocky Mountains."

Chinese tour groups are expected to receive a warm welcome when they arrive. Welcome ceremonies are in the work, and visitors will be allowed to tour Canada's parliament house - something that's usually reserved for government officials.

Canadian tourism officials have also expressed optimism towards the Chinese market.

A key issue for outbound tourists is getting a visa. The Canadian embassy in China says Chinese citizens can receive their visas within 5 working days of submitting their applications.
