The number of Shanghai residents flocking to Japan this summer has jumped by 75 percent, compared with the same period last year. It's now the most popular destination for Shanghainese travellers this summer. This is mainly due to the relaxation of the tourist visa policy, and the availability of more student packages.

Since July 1st, requirements for Japan's tourist visa have been relaxed, and the application procedure has been simplified. As a result, there's been a hike in the number of Shanghai residents interested in Japanese tours.

Packages for Japan have become a popular product for travel agents to promote. And many travel agents are designing more individualized itineraries, to cater to the different demands of holidaymakers.

This summer, Japan became the number one tourist destination for Shanghai travellers, greater than Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
