Shenzhen's path to modernity

08-27-2010 09:26 BJT Special Report:30 Anniversary of Shenzhen SEZ |

Once a small fishing village, Shenzhen is now one of the most modern and fastest growing cities in China. In recent years, the city has drawn worldwide attention for being a hub of commercial activity.

In 2009, Shenzhen's GDP reached a record high of 820 billion yuan, almost 1000 times what it was in 1979. The city was also the first to attract millions of migrant workers from around China. The floating migrant population now totals 12 million, making up 82 percent of the city's total population.

In July this year, the State Council approved an expansion program for Shenzhen's Special Economic Zone, set to make it five times its original size.
