Commerce Minister Chen Deming has defended China's restrictions on exports of rare earth metals after Japanese officials raised concerns about supply. The rare earth trade had sparked heated discussions even before the weekend's Economic Dialogue.
Chen says massive exploitation of rare earth will cause huge environmental damage. He pointed out China's control measures are in accordance with WTO regulations. Chen says such control measures will also have an impact on China's own market, where parts for Japanese products are assembled.
