The supply of natural gas from Sichuan adds one more clean energy artery to eastern China's Yangtze River delta. It not only helps ensure supply, but also lays the foundation for a low-carbon economy in the area.
Zhejiang is one of six provinces and two municipalities benefiting from the Sichuan-East natural gas project. The gas will account for half of Zhejiang's total use every day.
Wang Chunmei, Vice GM of Zhejiang Natural Gas Dev't said "Natural gas from Sichuan will be a major supply for us. It effectively ensures our use of natural gas. Gas shortages, like what happened last winter, will not occur this year. We are reassured."
According to the distribution plan, half of the 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas produced in Sichuan every year will be sent to Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang. It's aimed at raising the proportion of clean energy used in the Yangtze River Delta.
Zhang Fuping, Official of Zhejiang Energy Department said "In addition to ensuring supply of natural gas for residents, natural gas from Sichuan replaces quite a large part of coal and oil consumed by industries. It doubles natural gas consumption in the province."
Zhejiang is planning to spread natural gas pipelines to all cities and major towns in the province. The proportion of natural gas in energy consumption will increase from 2 percent to 8 percent. 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be used every year, replacing 15 million tons of coal and reducing carbon emissions by 1.7 million tons.
