World leaders have gathered in the Norwegian capital Oslo, to discuss fresh ways to bring about global economic recovery, and tackle the challenge of rising global unemployment.

The prime ministers of troubled economies Greece and Spain, were amongst the leaders. The conference was hosted by Norway, the IMF and the International Labor Organisation or ILO. According to the ILO, around 210 million workers are currently unemployed, a rise of 34 million in just three years.

According to the International Trade Union Confederation, some three to four hundred million jobs need to be created over the next decade to sustain the global recovery.

Christine Lagarde, French Finance Minister said "A jobless recovery would not be a recovery, and I will propose ideas, principles to really focus our effort on unemployment, creating employment, improving the content of jobs and making sure that we do everything we can to keep jobs."

Juan Somavia, Chief of Int'l Labor Organization said "Whatever you do, the only way is through growth and the only way you are going to have a functioning and strong economy is growth that creates jobs, so we have to increase the job intensity of growth, and in order for people to be able to consume you have to create a much better relationship between productivity and salaries, because the fact that productivity went this way and salaries continued low is the origin of the debt trap in which so many citizens in the United States, in Europe and other countries, fell into. So both this are necessary."
