It's hoped the economic zone in central plain region will boost China's economic growth, and address developmental imbalances.

The Central Plain Economic Zone centers mainly on Henan Province, and stretches to neighboring Shanxi, Hebei, Anhui, and Shandong Provinces.

The zone encompasses a total population of 150 million, and contributes output of over 8 percent to the national economy. But despite its potential for growth, the central plain region has remained under the radar from government development strategies. Economists are hoping that will soon change.

Yang Ruilong, School of Economics Dean of Renmin University of China said "Whether the central plain area will be an important player in boosting China's economic development, is dependent on whether the central government will include it in its development strategies."

The Central Plain area is endowed with robust human resources and industrial advantages. Economists believe the economic zone will help achieve urbanization, as well as address key urban-rural issues.

Liu Wei, Vice President of Peking University said "The exploration of the economic zone aims to solve the fundamental issues China faces in its economic development process. This includes the imbalance of urban-rural dual structures, and industrial structural problems."

Li Yining, Economist said "The development of the area is integral to China's growth. If it's given the opportunity to flourish, it will boom. The rejuvenation of this region will boost China's overall development."

With its regional advantages, the Central Plain zone will also promote the development of China's western area, as well as helping transform the industrial landscape of the eastern area.

The opportunity for economic growth and transformation in the region is clearly significant. That's why academics and economists alike are pushing for the development of the central plain area to feature in China's "twelfth five year plan".
