Besides cabbage, South Korea is undergoing a severe radish shortage. And in order to boost supply, the government has canceled import duties on both vegetables. Meanwhile, Chinese radish companies are seeing an opportunity and they're looking to cash in.

The radish shortage in South Korea comes as a surprise. So farmers of the vegetable in China didn't see a reason to increase their production and their total exports of radish will be basically unchanged this year.

The only way for them to cash in on the South Korean under-supply is to act quickly and snatch up the existing radish in the country. And that's exactly what some entrepreneurs in Zhejiang province are doing. They're even a step ahead, heading to northeastern Liaoning province to procure radishes there, before the maturity season of the vegetable in their own province.

Shen Jiakui, Vice GM of Zhejiang Zhixing Group said "Radish prices are rising in the north of China, and we have already started to export them to South Korea."

Some Zhejiang export businesses have even dispatched employees to Liaoning province. They engage in the purchasing, processing and export, making it a one-stop operation, saving time and seizing more market share.

Han Songkun, GM of Hangzhou Zhanhong Food Company said "We have employees in the north. They are responsible for the purchase and process of radishes. And I am in charge of exporting."

In addition to snapping up the limited resource, businesses have begun to adjust their structures and target areas of export to better cater to South Korean customers with a taste for radish.
