The Shanghai World Expo has officially exceeded expectations. In it's final week, figures have been released showing visitor numbers have gone beyond 70 million.

According to the National Tourism Administration, the 70 million target was met on Sunday. The number of group tourists has exceeded 20 million, and more than 3.5 million overseas visitors came to the event. The three targets have all been achieved before the expo's closing this weekend.

Shao Qiwei, Director of National Tourism Administration said "This is the first time an International World Expo has attracted so many visitors, exceeding the record set by the 1970 Expo in Osaka."

The large volume of overseas visitors has also attributed to the growth of the tourism market. Data shows that each overseas traveller spent an average of 200 US dollars a day during their visit in Shanghai.

Shao Qiwei said "The income from expo tourism has hit around 80 billion yuan. The expo helped boost tourism across the country."

Figures also show that other industries including aviation and catering have also been boosted by the Expo, seeing growth of more than 20 percent.
