China voices expectations to APEC meetings

An informal leaders' meeting will be held this weekend in Yokohama, Japan. Chinese president Hu Jintao will attend the meeting and deliver a speech.

The main themes will be for further change and action. Delegations will discuss regional economic integration, new strategies of economic growth, security and technology cooperation.

APEC was established in 1989 and has 21 members. It is the highest ranking and most influential economic cooperation in the Asia Pacific region and the meeting is held yearly.

Liu Zhenmin, Assistant Minister of Chinese Foreign Ministry said "First, we hope to cooperate on economic balance, sustainability and innovative growth. Secondly, we hope to further implement trade liberalization, and accelerate regional economic integration. Thirdly, we hope leaders at this conference will give clear indications that they oppose trade barriers and protectionism, supporting the Doha talks. Fourth, we hope APEC can help developing countries and members improve innovation capabilities and bridge the gap between developed and developing countries. And fifth, we hope to promote APEC reforms to let it play a greater role in Asia Pacific economic development. "
