It's never too early to look forward to Christmas, and with the holiday just one month away, it's time to bring out the advent calendars and start looking for a tree. And business in the eastern Chinese city of Yiwu is booming.

Yiwu produces so much of the world's holiday paraphernalia, it's becoming known as China's own Christmas village. But although orders have increased, profits have not.

Nearly 300 wholesalers in Yiwu are selling Christmas products. Orders this year have increased compared to last year. And even though orders from foreign customers began to drop earlier this month, domestic ones have picked up.

Nearly 300 wholesalers in Yiwu are selling Christmas products.

Huang Yunxu, GM of Yiwu Boxu Handicraft Company said "Orders have risen by 20 to 30 percent from last year. Many domestic customers are ordering."

One purchaser said "I came late. Lots of products are already sold out."

But more orders have not translated into larger profits due largely to the increasing price of raw materials, such as plastic and cotton. The price of plastic has jumped by 16 percent, from 9500 yuan to 11,000 yuan per ton.

Huang Yunxu said "Cotton and plastic prices have risen, so we use less of them or even replace them with other materials."

Even Santa's wardrobe is taking a hit. To save on materials and costs, many businesses are using cheaper materials for his red overcoat.
