12-02-2010 11:04 BJT

China's International Summit on that industry kicked off here in Beijing. A Chinese official noted that the pure electric cars will be next major trend in the country's auto industry development and estimated that by 2020, the number of vehicles on the road will jump to 200 million from just 62 million in 2009.

He notes that along with the massive increase, problems will also arise in areas such as environmental protection and increased traffic.

Zhang Xiangmu, Ministry of Industry and IT said "Pure electric cars is the major trend in China's new energy auto development and technology. We should emphasize the promotion of pure electric cars and hybrid electric vehicles. At the same time we should continue to research fuel cell technology. And we should keep up with international standards on the development of new energy technology."
