The sixth round of talks between the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation, will be held in Taipei on December 21. The two institutions announced at a preparatory consultation in Shanghai on Tuesday that a cross-strait medical and health cooperation agreement will be signed.

The two institutions settled the final details of a medical and health cooperation agreement which will be signed during the upcoming talks. Negotiations for this agreement began in October this year, the two sides have already reached consensus.

Kao Koong-Lian, Vice Chairman of Straits Exchange Foundation said "Talks between experts from the mainland and Taiwan have gone smoothly. The agreement covers epidemic prevention and cure, medical research and development, as well as Chinese traditional medicine management. Signing the deal will help effectively manage medical and sanitarian risks for both the mainland and Taiwan."

The negotiators will also aim to reach a consensus on a cross-Strait investment protection agreement at the next round of talks.

Zheng Lizhong, Executive Vice President of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits said "The investment protection agreement is an important part of the follow-up negotiations after the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, which took effect in September. We're making an effort to sign the deal at the 7th round of talks.

The two sides have negotiated three times on the investment protection agreement since November this year. Both hope to sign the deal as soon as possible so as to improve trade exchange.

The mainland delegation is expected to arrive in Taipei on Monday.
