The euro zone's manufacturing PMI rose to 57.1 in December from 55.3 a month earlier. That neared April's 46-month high, and marked the 15th month above 50, the mark that divides growth from contraction.

The Markit Eurozone Manufacturing PMI showed surging new orders, and a fast-improving labor market helped the expansion. Germany remains the star performer, followed by France. The survey's output index also rose to 58.4 in December, a five-month high. It said there were encouraging signs in the euro zone's periphery in December, where export sales helped boost output growth in all cases except Greece.
