Jerry Brown has been sworn in as California's 39th governor, taking over for perhaps the most famous one, Republican "governor" Arnold Schwarzenegger. As a veteran Democrat, Jerry is expected to revive California, the US state with not only the largest population, but also the worst credit rating.

Brown becomes just the second person to serve three terms as California's governor. He served two terms from 1975 to 1983. And after 28 years, he's back at 72 years of age and will inherit a much different and more troubled state than the one he led decades ago.

At his swearing-in, he pledged a "tough budget" to turn around the deficit-ridden state. He has called for more spending cuts to balance the books and pledged to make environmental issues a top priority. The new governor will release his budget proposal for the coming fiscal year next Monday.
