Tech savvy Chinese travellers are surfing the net for the best deals, ahead of the Spring Festival holiday. Online air ticket bookings have taken off, encouraging a few new players to vie for market share.

Millions of Chinese are planning to head home for the traditional Spring Festival -- a time for family reunion.

The tech savvy travellers are hitting the websites of airline companies and ticket agencies, to get the best deals.

And the online sales boom has attracted some new players., a portal for online retailers, and search engine company Baidu launched their own services last year.

News portal Netease has also recently launched its air ticket booking service.

The new players offer cheap tickets, with discounts of up to 80 percent. They admit their ticket sales are more for promotional purposes, than making a profit.

Zhu Jian, PR Manager of said "Our online ticket service is almost free, as we are returning profits back to customers. We hope the service would make us known to more customers."

Still, traditional operators claim their services remain unaffected.

They say the large discount offers by new players pose no challenges because they expire so quickly. In addition, their offers are limited in number, and therefore are only available to very few costumers.
