ECFA boosts cross-Strait trade

01-21-2011 14:39 BJT

Since the start of the new year, the "early harvest program" under the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement between the mainland and Taiwan has been underway. We take a look at how the program has boosted cross-Strait economic ties.

Ever since ECFA's "early harvest program" took effect, trade between the mainland and Taiwan has seen improvement. The "early harvest" list are items able to enjoy preferential tariffs under the ECFA. Xinjinlu is a mainland-based company that received the first commercial order for Taiwan fruit. The company booked 30 cargo containers of Taiwan fruit for the Chinese New Year period. The fruit trading company plans to sell the fruit in over 10 major mainland cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou.

Wu Suying, General Manager of Xinjinlu Fruit & Vegetable Trade Co., Xiamen "The volume is much bigger than before. Since the tariff was reduced, the cost has been reduced."

Under the program, the Chinese mainland will reduce tariffs on over 530 products from Taiwan, while Taiwan will drop duties on almost 270 mainland products. The two sides will enjoy zero taxes for exports of hundreds of products by 2012.

Some experts say the program will significantly enhance the competitiveness of Xiamen's exports of electronics, textiles and religious goods.

Lan Keming, Researcher of Taipei World Trade Center said "Products made on the mainland are usually good value. The prices are low, and the quality is good. Those produced is Taiwan are good as well, but they are more expensive because the production cost there is greater."

Nearly 900 Xiamen-based companies are reportedly taking part in ECFA's "early harvest program". That means the the tariff reduction for exported products from Taiwan is over 200 million yuan, and tax on mainland-made products exported to Taiwan can be reduced as much as 15 million yuan.
