India: Inflation to ease in March

02-16-2011 08:46 BJT

India is also facing increasing inflationary pressure. The Deputy Chief of the Planning Commission, predicts inflation will drop by March.

Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chief of India's Planning Commission said "I expect that the deceleration in inflation will continue. Several bodies in the government have said that they expect the inflation in March and you will know that only in April or mid-April, that inflation in March will be around 7 percent and I hope that will be true. It is certainly coming down."

India's Finance Minister also said he expected inflation to ease to seven percent by end of March. And it's not just government rhetoric. Top Indian economists are also expecting inflation to come down in the next few months. The Wholesale Price Index, India's main inflation gauge, marginally eased to 8.2 percent in January. But the country's central bank is likely to keep tightening monetary policy because price pressures are still above the comfort zone.
