The head of General Motors says China will play a bigger role in the automaker's future. It's hoping to make an even bigger push in the world's largest auto market.

GM Chief Executive Daniel Akerson told a news conference on Tuesday that China was central to the company's global strategy.

Daniel Akerson, CEO of General Motors said "China is a unique market sitting in what I think is probably the highest growth area over the next ten, twenty, thirty years that being Asia, and China being the epicentre of that growth."

GM sold more cars and trucks in China last year than it did in the US for the first time in the company's 102-year history.

GM's January sales also hit a monthly record high of 268,000 in January, up 22 percent from a year earlier.

Its plan is to bring further research and development to China, to create car designs specific for the Chinese buyer.

Daniel Akerson said "We see China as I said in my remarks, is not only the biggest global market, it's General Motors biggest market, surpassing the United States for the second year in a row.... We want to understand the preferences that the China market wants, we bring our best designs, our best technology, to China, we have for years."

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported on Tuesday that China's imports of foreign-model cars nearly doubled last year, with Japanese and German models most popular among buyers looking to upgrade their vehicles.

Exports of vehicles also rose up 40 percent from the year before.
