Asia has long been a hub for manufacturing, but it's increasingly looking to the services sector. Business leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation are gathering in Guangzhou to discuss the development of the services industry in the region. The event is also expected to prepare topics for APEC leaders in Hawaii later this year.

The first meeting of the APEC Business Advisory Council this year brings together business leaders, economists and scholars from 21 APEC members. The five-day event focuses on the development of services industry and economic growth in the region. Participants also discuss China's service industry during the twelfth Five-Year plan period.

Ba Shusong, Deputy Director-General of Inst. of Finance Studies, Dev't Research Center said "China's manufacturing sector is shifting to the central and western regions. This has created huge opportunities to develop the service industry and upgrade the industrial structure in key cities like Guangzhou. While international competitions are mainly among industry clusters and city clusters, developing the Pearl River Delta region as a whole is also a good way to participate in global competitions."

Participants also suggest Guangzhou attract more high-end talents to increase its competitive edge.

Business leaders are also calling for more exchange and cooperation in the services sector within the Asia-Pacific region.

The APEC Business Advisory Council holds four meetings annually to provide business circles a platform to participate in APEC.
