Industries have ground to a halt across Japan following the earthquake and tsunami. And that means China can expect interruptions to the supply of raw materials. Import and export companies in Shanghai say business has been damaged, but it's too early to count the cost.

This international company in Shanghai trades auto parts and semiconductors between China and Japan.

Most of the company's suppliers are from Japan, and the clients are mainly from China.

The manager has lost contact with a number of his Japanese suppliers since the quake.

Japanese-made auto parts usually make up over 30 percent of the company's total sales.

Na Xinyi, Director of a Shanghai international trade company said "We have lost contact with some suppliers in Japan, and it has had some impact. How will that influence our business and what we should do about it? We still need to do further research on that."

Experts say it's certain Japan's exports to countries like China will be impacted in the short term. But it will vary from sector to sector.

Sun Lijian, Deputy Dean of School of Economics, Fudan University said "The key is how long it will take for Japan to recover. If the recovery period takes long, many Chinese companies who need the Japanese machinery can rely on stock, and the price of those products will be further pushed up."

Experts also say there is a possibility that the rising prices of Japanese machinery will drive up the prices of crude oil.
