The first ASEAN-EU business summit has begun in Jakarta. ASEAN delegates and companies from the European Union are meeting to discuss issues that relate to trade between the two blocs. These issues include finance, agriculture and infrastructure.

The ASEAN-EU business summit aims to enhance awareness about trade and investment opportunities in ASEAN and the EU, to identify market access opportunities and challenges, and to better facilitate trade and investment relations between the two sides.

A senior EU official says trade would serve as one of the best forms of recovery from the global recession.

Karel De Gucht, EU Commissioner for Trade said "These are difficult times for economic markets and business leaders. Yes, open trade means more opportunity but fierce global competition as well. Companies and governments worldwide are playing hardball. Meanwhile many governments are facing budgetary issues which might scare off some investors and hamper growth. In EU we have the twin challenges of fiscal consolidation and job creation in such circumstances we must use trade as the model for growth."

The Indonesian president says ASEAN could learn from the EU, and trade and investment between the two parties are vital to stimulate growth in the global economic recovery.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesian President said "The EU can be a strong partner with ASEAN to develop together. Europe has a much longer experience in economic integration and community building. ASEAN has and will continue to learn from the European experience. There is no doubt that ASEAN and EU are important for each other."

Officials believe the first-ever ASEAN-EU business summit provides an opportunity for creating business ties, and it's time for the private sectors to have direct dialogue.

Currently, the EU is the second largest trading partner and the largest investor in ASEAN, while ASEAN is the EU's fifth largest trading partner.
